Now that’s what I call a Tumblr Tuesday.

Listenr 1.4 is a bit more than just bugfixes though. Large swaths of the app have been rewritten to take advantage of the new Tumblr API.

The most notable addition in this release is native reblogging support.

Also, a brief note on streaming problems and crashes: up until now, I’ve been using the wonderful AudioStreamer Class written by Matt Gallagher for audio playback, but I’ve realized over the past few months that this solution is inadequate for Listenr’s needs. I’m now in the process of rewriting the audio streaming portion of the app from scratch and will hopefully be done soon.

One last thing: I’m looking to start translating Listenr into different languages. If any users out there are fluent in another language, I’d love your help. Send an email or Tumblr Message my way.

That’s right. I’ve decided to make the app free for the time being. The plan is to add some super awesome paid features in upcoming releases, but the core functionality of Listenr will remain available pro bono. Much thanks to everyone who supported me by purchasing the app over the last few months. Now on to the new features:

The two big ones this time are Last.fm Scrobbling and Search. Also, all avatars and post metadata is stored locally on your phone, so this should result in a snappier experience.

To enable Last.fm scrobbling, just head on over to the Settings App, and under Listenr, flip the switch to ON. The next time you open the app, you’ll be asked once for your credentials. Rest assured, Listenr never stores your Last.fm password.

Now that summer’s upon us, I’m trying to increment the app more rapidly. I didn’t announce the arrival of Listenr 1.1 because, frankly, it was a bit of an embarrassment. Soon after its approval, I discovered a nasty bug that caused the application to crash consistently on specific blog pages. Luckily, I managed to track it down, and a new version should be in your hands within a week.

Things to look forward to:

Updated Home page interface. Now you can rearrange blogs. And everyone loves rounded corners, right?
Shuffling!
Double tap a song to like it.

This is just a taste of things to come. Expect more interesting developments soon. And as always, I’m open to suggestions.

This update brings improved streaming and listening to posts from individual blogs:

I noticed that the app doesn't stop playback when the headphone jack is pulled out. Thought you might want to add it since that is the standard for iPod use. Also, would be cool to see a setting where you could automatically pull 100 or so liked posts from Tumblr, though that might be more than the API allows. great app!

Yep, thanks for the feedback. Pausing when the audio source changes is definitely something we’d like to implement for the next release.

Tumblr’s likes API is pretty restricting. Only 50 posts at a time, and we can’t filter beforehand to just get music posts back like we can with the Dashboard. This means a big chunk of those 50 posts might not even be audio. And unfortunately API requests are rate-limited to one every 10 seconds. So that’s the best we can do for now.

I’m working slowly but surely on getting version 1.1 in your hands. Send us an email if you’d like to be a beta tester.

If you have any audio posts that are missing ID3 tags, please take a moment to update them with proper song, album, and artist information. Listenr relies on ID3 tags to identify music. Knowing the title of the song you’re listening to is pretty pleasant.
